Spectra Logic Backup and Recover Blog

Data Management and the Runaway Horse

I’ve recently returned from the 2010 Storage Visions Conference in Las Vegas and wanted to share a few observations. The highlight of my week in Vegas was the honor of accepting a product of the year award for our T-Finity product for Media & Entertainment (M&E) Storage. This is Spectra Logic’s enterprise tape library that stores up to 45PB in a single tape library, and is uniquely suited to broadcast customers with large archive and storage requirements due to high availability, ease of use and scalability. This award marks the first honor for our newest tape library.

At the show, I participated in a panel discussion about tape with other industry leaders in the broadcast space moderated by Clyde Smith of Turner Broadcasting System. We examined the state of storage as it relates to the media and entertainment market. A couple of interesting areas we explored were the role of SSDs in storage and how it improves system performance. We also looked at the future of tape and discussed how vendors today are integrating more intelligence in tape-based solutions. Recent advancements and innovations have improved the quality of tape-based solutions, and I can say with confidence that the quality of tape now matches the quality of disk. With the massive growth of digital content, the most sensible solution is to implement a tiered storage solution that employs a combination of disk and tape to best meet the performance, cost and long-term retention needs for the M&E market.

In the old western movies, viewers often catch a scene where the cowboy’s horse races away when spooked, and the cowboy must lasso his steed back in. I liken this image to a storage administrator faced with managing growing data sets while simultaneously trying to protect and manage his or her budget. Good news, folks: tape can solve the issues both fronts.

Stay tuned for upcoming news around media & entertainment and make sure to catch Spectra Logic at NAB in booth number N6216 this spring.

Top five observations from IBC 2009 in Amsterdam

Spectra Logic recently returned from IBC2009, where we announced a major customer win: Discovery Communications. Here are the observations we made at the event:

1.       Attendance was quite good. It was down only 7% from the previous year, which is modest in comparison to other shows these days.
2.       Those who attended were top decision makers with active projects. Sales. We are seeing an increase in market activity despite the poor economy, and have a large pipeline of active archive projects. We see a very active market and are beginning to see a positive energy to release POs as the economy improves.
3.       There are rumors of a location change in 2010. A fresh location would help draw new attendees and generate new energy around IBC
4.       The amount of content in the media and entertainment market continues to grow year-over-year. In order to remain competitive, a number of Spectra and non-Spectra customers are converting old analog content into digital formats. This enables them to repurpose content for delivery via newer and more popular mediums such as IP and mobile, hence providing new revenue opportunities.
5.       The move to a digital workflow environment is no longer cutting edge. The masses are moving to digital, file-based workflow environments and archive has become an essential piece of that puzzle.

Overall, a great show and I am looking forward to next year!

CYAssets for Media and Entertainment

By Hossein ZiaShakeri, SVP of Strategic Marketing and Business Development

You may have noticed a number of recent announcements and articles on how media and entertainment customers who have selected Spectra Logic as the preferred vendor for data asset management.

Jon Toigo recently stated in an article about two of Spectra Logic’s broadcast customers NASCAR and the Discovery Channel, that tape continues to be the preferred home for nearly 70 percent of the world's data -- especially in the core of the digital revolution: video.

Media and entertainment is not a new area of focus for Spectra Logic but we are seeing growth here. Outside of the technical benefits of our high-density tape libraries, we understand the industry's digital archive issues and work closely with our customers to deliver the support necessary to provide archival solutions that offer high capacity and room for growth.

Spectra Logic also announced recently that the Tennis Channel selected a Spectra T950 robotic tape library to store many hours of video footage. Dean Hadaegh, CTO and senior VP of technical operations for the Tennis Channel was recently quoted in a Broadcast Engineering article as saying that they chose Spectra Logic tape libraries for the reliability and ease in adding slots and drives as necessary. "The Spectra Logic automated tape library, with its multiple high-speed drives, has proven invaluable in meeting our backup time constraints," Hadaegh said. "The T950 system's ability to be logically partitioned and handle multiple media formats is also an important factor. Besides cost savings related to the type of media, tape allows us the ability to easily off-site media for disaster recovery purposes."

In addition to solving the company’s backup and archive requirements, the scalable archive will be put to good use during the Tennis Channel’s live coverage of the upcoming U.S. Open tournament.

We are proud to be a preferred digital assets archive provider for these companies and a host of others including Scripps Networks, Foxtel, CBS, Showtime, Cox Television, Entertainment Tonight, MTV, National Geographic, AC Neilsen UK etc. More information on how we address the media and entertainment business can be found here.
