Data Storage Provider Teams with Milestone Systems and SoleraTec to Deliver Optimized Video Lifecycle Management

BOULDER, Colo.—May 10, 2012-- Spectra Logic today announced that it will be showcasing its T-Series digital data tape library at the IFSEC International security show, May 14-17, 2012 in Birmingham, UK. The company will partner with Milestone Systems and SoleraTec to demonstrate an integrated solution for video lifecycle management in the Milestone Systems’ booth located in Hall 4/Stand F90.

The integrated solution on display at IFSEC features Milestone’s XProtect® software, SoleraTec’s Phoenix RSM software and a Spectra® T50e LTO digital data tape library. The solution offers customers a complete end-to-end package that meets both short and long term video data retention requirements.

To provide further value to the Milestone recording server, SoleraTec’s Phoenix RSM software extends archive and retention capacity to removable storage media such as LTO digital computer data tape. Phoenix RSM manages online, near-line, and offline storage resources for the Milestone platform and makes all video assets very quickly searchable and viewable.

The Spectra Logic data tape libraries managed by the Phoenix RSM solution allow high-resolution video feeds to be stored on lower-cost storage devices while Phoenix RSM-generated low-resolution companion files remain on primary storage for ultra-fast search and video playback.

Spectra Logic’s T-Series family of digital data tape storage systems meets long-term retention and accessibility requirements and provides the lowest cost per GB storage for surveillance video. These systems enable ultra-fast search and playback, the ability to store at maximum frame rates and resolution, near-line and offline video storage capabilities, and cost effective scaling to meet future capacity needs.

ANU Storage Cloud Relies on Spectra Logic for 9.5 Petabyte Active Archive

SYDNEY, AU and BOULDER, Colo.—March 6, 2012—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced that the Australian National University (ANU) located in Canberra, and ranked as one of the top universities in Australia, recently deployed two Spectra Logic T950 enterprise tape libraries at the heart of its 9.5 petabyte tape-based active archive to support ANU’s high performance private data cloud storage solution. The cloud-based storage installation with Spectra’s tape-based active archive allows ANU to efficiently support its exponential data growth, accelerate access to its research data, and improve overall data reliability.

ANU also hosts the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) – Australia’s national high-end research computing service, funded by the Australian Government through its NCRIS and Super Science research infrastructure initiatives, and by a number of national research organizations including ANU, CSIRO, Bureau of Meteorology and Geoscience Australia. With the University’s data doubling every 14-18 months, the enterprise requirements of ANU, together with the research needs served by NCI, have led to a massive and rapidly increasing requirement for data storage and management.

BOULDER, Colo.—February 14, 2012 —Spectra Logic, celebrating 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced that its technology has been deployed by IWM (Imperial War Museums) to provide archiving and disaster recovery for its vast collection of digital assets. The installation is part of a £3million project that includes the deployment of high-end digital scanning equipment, a Collection Management System (CMS), bespoke Digital Asset Management (DAM) software and a mass storage system to handle the significant amounts of digital data generated by the initiative.

In addition to its conventional museum role IWM is also a major national art gallery, records archive and research centre. Its trustees’ endeavours to collect every type of historical evidence pertaining to conflicts across the world has seen it build an impressive archive, which includes more than 15,000 paintings, drawings and sculptures and 30,000 posters; objects ranging from aircraft, armoured fighting vehicles and naval vessels to uniforms, badges, personal equipment, and medals and decorations; documents, both British and foreign; a library of more than 155,000 books; 120 million feet of cine film and more than 6,500 hours of video tape; more than six million photographs, and some 32,000 hours of historical sound recordings. In particular, the project will be used to preserve precious audio and video footage of Winston Churchill and the Battle of Britain.

Spectra Logic’s T950 tape library has been deployed at IWM Duxford in the UK, one of the museum’s five sites and Europe’s premier aviation museum. From this location, the Spectra® T950 will be used to archive material as the museum’s cataloguing and digitalisation efforts gather pace. IWM also creates around 5TB of new data every year, including information on current operations received from the Ministry of Defence which will also be housed on the Spectra T950. The T950 provides 1PB of storage today and can expand to deliver more capacity as needed in the future. It is connected to IWM’s London data centre sites via Gigabit Ethernet. IWM has set up a mirrored system between the two sites so data is first written to primary storage in IWM London and then replicated to IWM Duxford.

This, allied with the long-term LTO roadmap, ensures that our investment is future-proofed and our requirements met at the lowest possible price per GB.”

Nathan Thompson Recognized for His Contributions to the Local Business Community

BOULDER, Colo.—February 6, 2012-- Spectra Logic today announced that Nathan Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, has been named to the Boulder County Business Hall of Fame Class of 2012. Thompson was recognized for his outstanding business and personal contributions to the Boulder area. The 2012 Inductees will be recognized at the annual Boulder County Business Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon on April 25, 2012 at the Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Longmont.

“I am truly honored to be recognized for this prestigious award,” said Thompson. “As a business leader, I’ve always believed in giving back to the local community by supporting business and philanthropic initiatives that make Boulder such a great place to work and live.”

Thompson founded Spectra Logic from his dorm room at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Over the past 32 years, he has grown the company into a global provider of data storage solutions with 450 employees worldwide. Under Thompson’s leadership, Spectra Logic has scored an extraordinary number of storage industry “firsts” and has received numerous awards.

Thompson is very active in the Boulder business community holding board positions at local organizations including the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Young Presidents Organization, the Chief Executives Organization and the Wells Fargo Community board. He is also involved in a variety of philanthropic activities with organizations such as the Homes of Hope in Tijuana and Ensenada, Mexico, Colorado 30 Group, The Colorado Trail Foundations’ Adopt-A-Trail program, EFFA (Emergency Family Assistance Association) of Boulder County, the Alexander Dawson School, the University Of Colorado, Boulder College of Business and College of Engineering and Room to Read.

The mission of the Boulder County Business Hall of Fame is to research, document and recommend for induction into the Hall of Fame, those individuals who have been instrumental, through business related efforts, in providing direction, energy and support of the shaping of Boulder County since its inception.

Spectra Logic Launches LTO-6 Tape Drive Pre-Purchase Program

Provides Investment Protection and Guaranteed Access to First Available LTO-6 Shipments

BOULDER, Colo.—January 17, 2012—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced the worldwide launch of its Linear Tape Open Generation 6 (LTO-6) tape drive pre-purchase program. With general availability of LTO-6 tape drives and media expected in 2012, customers can now join the LTO-6 pre-purchase program and receive LTO-5 drives today for use until LTO-6 drives become available. Once LTO-6 is released, pre-purchase customers will be at the top of the initial shipment list to receive new LTO-6 drives from Spectra. This unique program from Spectra Logic enables customers to make tape library purchases to meet today's data storage needs while ensuring the investment is future-proofed with an upgrade to the next generation drive and media technology once available.

For Spectra's larger libraries, including the T-Finity, T950, T680, T380 and T200, LTO-6 tape drives will include native 8 gigabit (Gb) fibre channel interfaces that are compatible with existing 2Gb, 4Gb and 8Gb fibre channel switches and host bus adapters. For the Spectra T50e and T120 libraries, LTO-6 tape drives will come in either 8Gb fibre channel or 6Gb SAS interfaces. LTO-6 will offer a storage capacity of up to 8.0 terabytes (compressed, or 3.2 TB native) – more than double the capacity of the previous generation, and expected transfer rates of up to 525 megabytes per second (compressed, or 210 MB/s native).¹

LTO-6 drives are designed with backwards-compatible read-and-write capability with LTO-5 cartridges, and backward read capabilities with LTO-4 and LTO-5 cartridges, to ensure investment protection and to ease deployment. In addition, LTO-6 drives will be fully compatible with Spectra's BlueScale® software and features, including BlueScale Encryption and Key Management, Spectra's Media Lifecycle Management (MLM), Data Integrity Verification, drive-level AES-256 bit encryption key generation and WORM media capabilities.

Availability

Spectra Logic's pre-purchase program is available immediately to customers and channel partners worldwide for Spectra's complete line of T-Series tape libraries. The Spectra T-Finity, T950, T680, T380, T200, T120 and T50e libraries are all LTO-6 ready and eligible for pre-purchase. Participants in Spectra's LTO-6 pre-purchase program will be the first to receive LTO-6 drives when they become available. LTO-6 drives and media are expected to ship in the second half of 2012.

Spectra Logic shipped its first T950 tape library in October, 2004 with LTO-2 tape drives/media, and began shipping LTO-5 tape drives/media in June, 2010. The LTO Ultrium "open format" technology provides a trusted, long-term roadmap that currently extends to the eighth generation of LTO technology, and offers users the flexibility of multiple sources for their drives and media.
