Spectra Logic Protects Critical Biomedical Research Data at Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI)

The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, a part of the Novartis Research Foundation, Relies on Spectra T950 Tape Libraries for Scalable, High-Density Archiving

BOULDER, Colo.—March 9, 2010—Spectra Logic, celebrating 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced that the Switzerland-based Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI), a part of the Novartis Research Foundation, is relying on two Spectra® T950 tape libraries to archive and backup critical biomedical research data.

As a research institute, FMI exploits cutting edge research technology for biomedical research. FMI scientists are at the forefront of biomedical discovery, and are using high-throughput sequencing and microscopy experiments that can produce terabytes of data from a signal experiment. As a result, more than 10TB of new data is written to the Spectra Logic tape libraries each week in the form of new data or backups.

“Data volumes are doubling approximately every two years, so scalability is extremely important to us,” said Dean Flanders, chief information officer, FMI. “With Spectra Logic’s libraries we can easily scale by simply adding frames. We know our investment is protected and that our archiving and disaster recovery infrastructure will grow with us.” To accommodate its growing storage needs, FMI selected the Spectra T950 tape library to archive data automatically from disk-based primary storage. With the Spectra T950 solution, FMI can easily scale its storage capacity with the addition of up to seven additional frames, which would store more than 10PB of data.

After the initial implementation of the Spectra T950, FMI implemented a second T950 at a disaster recovery location. The second T950 stores an additional copy of the data from the initial T950 library. In the event of a significant incident or disaster affecting FMI’s primary data center, it is able to automatically shift from its normal disk staging to staging directly from tape at either site. The Spectra implementation has transformed FMI’s disaster recovery capabilities, enabling the IT team to bring terabytes of data back online in a matter of minutes.

Following three consecutive years of profitability, Spectra Logic sustained its profitable track record, posting profits for its fiscal second quarter and first half of 2010, which ended December 31, 2009. The world’s highest capacity enterprise tape library, the Spectra T-Finity^TMwas one of many leading products and innovations that the company introduced during this period.

Strong demand for enterprise and mid-range data protection solutions

Spectra Logic achieved double-digit sales growth in its enterprise and medium-sized tape libraries, disk-based systems and services/support. Spectra Logic’s disk-based nTier backup and deduplication appliances posted a record-setting quarter, led by the Spectra nTier 700. This popular mid-range backup solution easily integrates into existing environments, and allows customers to dramatically reduce storage consumption, efficiently replicate data from remote locations, and work with existing backup applications, including CommVault, Syncsort, Symantec and many others.

Strong sales of the Spectra T950 and the introduction of the Spectra T-Finity boosted the company’s enterprise tape sales. This growth reflects customers’ growing reliance on Spectra Logic’s enterprise tape libraries to provide scalable, high density, high-performance data backup and archiving platforms.

Extends Data Protection of Virtual Tape Libraries to Physical Tape Libraries, Enhancing Data Security and Simplifying IT Management for Backup and Recovery

BOULDER, Colo.—January 26, 2010—Spectra Logic, celebrating 30 years of data storage innovation, announced today that its nTierv80 Deduplication appliance achieved high accolades by OpenBench Labs following its recent review and analysis. Using a tiered data protection test scenario, OpenBench found that Spectra’s nTier Deduplication appliance easily extends data protection operations of virtual tape libraries (VTLs) to physical tape libraries.

Spectra’s nTier Deduplication appliance provides both the advantages of a sophisticated disk-to-disk (D2D) backup as well as the traditional data security benefits of off-site tape storage and hardware-based encryption, utilizing its storage virtualization software and integrated VTL and physical library synchronization. By doing so, the nTier Deduplication appliance addresses IT needs including cost containment and simplified management in virtual server environments, meeting rigorous compliance mandates and service level agreements, and enhanced data security.

“Organizations are looking to address the issues of data growth, resource utilization and compliance with government regulations for protecting and archiving data,” said Molly Rector, vice president of worldwide marketing and product management, Spectra Logic. “With the data deduplication and VTL technologies that underlie Spectra’s nTier appliance, and our seamless disk-to-tape (D2T) integration, customers can meet these challenges with ease and efficiency – and save money in the process.”

The lab test revealed that Spectra’s nTier Deduplication appliance:

· Maximizes the utilization of storage resources via the thin provisioning of virtual tape cartridges and data deduplication.

· Maximizes backup performance with post-processing deduplication, which can be scheduled based on the length of time after a backup or on the utilization of virtual tape cartridges.

· Minimizes backup windows using VTLs as surrogates for physical tape libraries by assigning physical tape libraries to VTLs and caching the barcodes and tape headers of tape cartridges located in the physical library.

· Automates data caching of tape cartridges, which provides for copying backup data to physical cartridges for security, while maintaining local deduplicated cartridges on the VTL for quick recovery.

“The Spectra nTier appliance enables IT administrators to fully leverage the value of both virtual and physical tape resources while reducing the amount of data stored with deduplication,” noted Jack Fegreus, CEO of OpenBench Labs, who conducted the test. “The backup throughput and storage utilization gains were impressive and the automated data caching feature handled a steady stream of virtual machine backup data at 225 MB per second and the deduplication resulted in a net storage savings of 35-to-1.”

To provide a virtual operating environment with a hierarchical infrastructure for backup, OpenBench Labs set up a Spectra nTier v80 appliance and a Spectra T50e physical tape library provisioned with two LTO-4 drives with 4Gbps fibre channel connections.

The OpenBench testing platform used a data protection test scenario for a VMware vSphere environment that included two Dell PowerEdge 1900 servers; Symantec NetBackup software; a QLogic SanBox switch; a Xiotech Emprise 5000 system; and a Spectra T50e tape library.Virtual tape libraries using Spectra T200 and T50e libraries were also established to test deduplication of virtual machine backup images.

Spectra Logic Announces Move to New Worldwide Headquarters Facility in Boulder, Colorado

New Location Features Executive Briefing Center, Modern Product Demonstration Data Center and Consolidates Associates under a Single Roof

BOULDER, Colo.—December 18, 2009—Spectra Logic, celebrating 30 years of data storage innovation, announced today that it is expanding its facilities at a new worldwide headquarters location in Boulder, Colorado in the spring of 2010. The new facility showcases a large, raised-floor customer demonstration area to view Spectra's enterprise-targeted products. The building’s size also enables all associates to be located in a single building, instead of multiple, smaller buildings at its current Boulder-based campus, where it has resided since 1983.

The new worldwide headquarters within the City of Boulder, Colorado is an 80,712-square-foot office and flex building. It will house members from every Spectra Logic department including the executive team, engineering, finance, manufacturing, marketing, sales and support. The financial details of the agreement are confidential and not available for disclosure.

“The steady growth of Spectra Logic’s products in both the disk and enterprise storage markets, coupled with three years of profitability as a corporation, has positioned Spectra to make this move at a very strategic time,” said Nathan Thompson, Spectra Logic’s CEO and founder. “We were able to identify an excellent real estate investment opportunity that enables the company to now demonstrate its enterprise products in a world-class facility.”

Unified Management: As the only enterprise-class library with a single management interface, the T-Finity uses Spectra’s BlueScale™ software to simplify administration, configuration, hot upgrades, security and local and remote reporting.

The Spectra T-Finity’s many 'built-in' features include: integrated data encryption; library virtualization and partitioning; and hardware, media and library management software – all included at no additional cost. Competitive offerings charge extra for these capabilities and require separate servers – increasing hardware, space, power, cooling, support contract and personnel management costs.

The Spectra T-Finity will be on display in booth #2595 at Super Computing 2009 (SC09) at the Portland Convention Center in Portland, Oregon, November 16-19. Spectra Logic executives will be on hand at the SC09 conference to answer questions and demonstrate the power of the Spectra T-Finity.

Pricing and availability

The Spectra T-Finity tape library is currently in beta and will be available in limited quantities starting in December 2009. List pricing for the Spectra T-Finity, including two LTO4 fibre channel drives, two robots, encryption, Spectra library lifecycle management and BlueScale management software, begins at $218,500.

T-Finity is compatible with all major archive and backup software applications including but not limited to: BakBone NetVault, CA ArcServe, and BrightStor, CommVault Sympana, Filetek StorHouse, FrontPorch DIVArchive, IBM HPSS and TSM, Legato DiskExtender and Networker, MassTech MassStore, QStar, Quantum StorNext, SGI DMF, SGL FlashNet, Symantec Backup Exec and NetBackup, Syncsort Backup Express and XenData.

Industry Veteran Grainger Brings Track Record of Success and Strong Customer Relationships

BOULDER, Colo.—November 3, 2009—Spectra Logic, a leading innovator of intelligently integrated data protection solutions, announced today thatit has promoted Brian Grainger to vice president of worldwide sales, overseeing all global sales functions, processes and management. Grainger brings more than 17 years of sales, product management and sales management experience in technology and data storage, as well as expertise in the Federal and high performance computing (HPC) sectors.

He was also instrumental in developing and building Spectra Logic’s high performance computing (HPC) business.

Penn Foster chose the Spectra® nTier v80 Deduplication appliance for its efficient storage reduction capabilities, high capacity, competitive price for performance and easy integration with Microsoft Data Protection Manager (DPM).

With high data volumes driven by its distance-learning programs, reliable backup and recovery is critical to Penn Foster and its 13 million students. The Spectra nTier v80 Deduplication appliance serves as Penn Foster’s long-term backup target for Microsoft DPM. With an average data reduction ratio of 20:1, the Spectra solution allows Penn Foster to easily retain two weeks of nightly full backups with room to expand retention times. The Spectra solution provides simple and efficient offsite data replication to Penn Foster’s primary data center.

The Spectra nTier v80 appliance delivers cost savings through efficient deduplicated replication and positions Penn Foster for solid offsite disaster recovery practices.
