Spectra Logic and CMS Distribution Launch Partnership

Furthers product offering in UK and Ireland

LONDON, UK, 15^th May, 2013—Spectra Logic announced that it has signed a distribution agreement with CMS Distribution, the largest independent distributor of IT data storage products and solutions in the UK and Ireland. This move is a significant stride in supporting Spectra Logic’s strategy to expand its presence in the EMEA region.

Following six consecutive years of profitability, Spectra Logic’s momentum continues as it strengthens its position in key geographical markets, including Europe. Spectra Logic’s high capacity, tape-based products have become the prevailing standard for media and entertainment, high performance computing (HPC), cloud and general IT organisations challenged with storing, managing and accessing massive amounts of data. This success has been spurred by Spectra’s flagship product, the Enterprise T-Finity tape library. To continue this successful track record in the tape back-up and archive sector, the new partnership with CMS Distribution will assist Spectra Logic in growing its target enterprise level reseller base.

Following a recent expansion of its sales team, the agreement will see Spectra Logic’s products made more widely available to organisations in a range of industries, including healthcare, education, finance, manufacturing, as well as within the general IT sector.

Spectra Logic Launches Mobile App for SpectraEDGE Channel Partner

Spectra Reseller Partners Gain 24x7 Anywhere Access to Sales and Technical Resources

BOULDER, Colo.—April 11, 2013—Spectra Logic today announced the availability of its SpectraEDGE mobile application, available exclusively to its SpectraEDGE channel reseller partners worldwide. Spectra Logic resellers can now receive real-time partner program highlights, news and sales tools previously only available on the SpectraEDGE portal. The app extends portal accessibility to SpectraEDGE resellers’ iOS- or Android-based mobile devices.

Italian Health Foundation Upgrades Storage Environments with Spectra Logic T50e Tape Library

London, UK, 25th March 2013, Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio, a specialist cardiopulmonary health foundation in Italy, has selected Spectra Logic, an innovator in data recovery and archive, to upgrade its LTO tape storage to the next level.

Paolo Marcheschi, Director of IT at Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio oversees all IT activities for the Italian Foundation, managing the backup infrastructure for its staff of 500 and including back-up of its growing 100 TB of research and patient data generated by its two hospitals, which are based 60 km apart in Pisa and Massa. The Foundation made a decision to increase its storage capacity so that it can efficiently store the many kinds of DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) images from diagnostic acquisition modalities and laboratory tests, needed for its patients and research. Local law requires that the hospitals store patients records for ten years but as a research facility, the Foundation keeps them for much longer.

The existing IT system comprised an Oracle server with QStar Archive Manager HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) software to manage the files stored in the Library. Due to the many TB’s of data health practitioners and researchers need to share at any one time, the Foundation has six servers supporting this system.

The criteria for the new LTO tape-based file storage system was determined on functionality and available resources. Hospital staff require access to customer data 24/7 so reliability was key as well as security for data protection purposes but as a small organisation with limited funding and just two IT administrators cost and ease to operate and maintain were also fundamental factors. Paolo looked at several options and chose the Spectra Logic T50e which combines best in class LTO tape technology, powerful library management functionality as well as increased security through integrated BlueScale® Encryption at a price within his budget.

The installation was achieved within the Foundation’s three month deadline and since implementation Paolo and his team are finding that the T50e is achieving on all objectives. He said, “All the data is sent for pick-up by the T50e through one server and we don’t have to do much, it’s working well. At the moment we have about 48TB stored on the T50e but the Foundation has plans to link its two hospitals by fibre channel over the next few months which will see that capacity increase as we mirror back-up at both locations.”

The T50e has been designed for organisations that need minimum downtime but have little time for maintenance operations as it self-monitors its media, drives, power supplies, controller and robotics, alerting administrators when they need attention.

University of Bristol Selects 2PB Capacity Spectra Logic Tape Library for Active Archive of File Data

London, UK, 19th March 2013, Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of backup and archive innovation, today announced that the University of Bristol has selected Spectra Logic’s T680 library to offload less frequently accessed data from the primary disk storage to an active tape archive.

The University of Bristol has over 5,300 employees and around 20,000 students. The University has more than 100 buildings hosting its faculties (which include arts, engineering, medical and veterinary science, medicine and dentistry as well as social sciences and law) and student facilities such as the union, libraries and accommodation. The University’s central IT infrastructure team is managed by Graeme Cappi, who has overall responsibility for all IT systems related to office and registration data, corporate databases and email as well as course materials and associated documents and images. With a heavily virtualised environment, providing over 450 servers to back-up in central services, it was decided that the University needed to create an archive and migrate less time-critical data to a tape library in order to free up costly primary storage.

Harvey Ditchfield, senior system administrator, consulted value-added reseller Cristie Data for advice on cost effective storage options for their large unstructured data set. After considering its options, the University decided to opt for a proof of concept trial-run for a few months with a Spectra Logic T200 tape library. Using StorHouse software from FileTek to move the data from primary disk storage to the active tape archive means that the data held on the library is always readily available.

Harvey explained, “Cost of storage was an important consideration so a tape library was a no-brainer. We looked at the Quantum i6000 but were particularly impressed by the density and security aspects of the Spectra Logic libraries. We also liked the way that Spectra Logic is interested in a relationship for the long-term and they were really helpful in ensuring that we had everything we needed from day one of the trial-run.”

After a successful trial, a decision was made to purchase the Spectra Logic T680, which has greater capacity than the trial T200 model with 42 rack units giving up two petabytes of compressed storage with the LTO-5 tape drive and media technology deployed in the library. The T-680 also includes the advanced security technology that initially attracted the University to choose Spectra Logic, namely integrated BlueScale Encryption to provide added AES-256 bit security for stored data and Media Lifecycle Management which records over 40 data points every time a tape is loaded, giving vital statistical and diagnostic information so that integrity of the data on the tapes can be ensured and easily managed. By deploying Spectra Logic’s Certified Media and BlueScale interface together, Graeme Cappi’s team can manage, track, and report all facets of tape usage from creation to retirement.

Bristol University’s Spectra T680 currently uses LTO-5 tapes which have a capacity of 1.5 TB native and 3.0 TB compressed each with throughput speed up to 140 MB/sec and 280 MB/sec respectively; they also help consolidate the university’s primary data storage, while managing less media. Post installation, the University of Bristol is migrating data into its Active Archive to help offload the primary storage and to more efficiently manage backups. “We currently backup over 120TB’s a week, so the ability to move infrequently accessed data off primary storage and into an archive is an essential part of our future strategy.”

“Not only will the University’s T680 help offload their primary storage today with up to one petabyte PB of uncompressed capacity in a single rack, but the library will continue to help them by scaling to multiple petabytes in the same footprint as they adopt future LTO generations.” said Brian Grainger, Spectra Logic’s senior vice president of worldwide sales.

Harvey added, “We’re very happy with our Spectra Logic T680; it needs very little time spent on it and delivers in all the ways we want it to. We’re seriously considering buying another one!”

NASCAR Productions Preserves and Archives High-Resolution Video Files with Spectra T-Finity

Spectra LTO Libraries Meet NASCAR Productions’ 260% Video Footage Growth

BOULDER, Colo.—March 5, 2013—Spectra Logic today announced that NASCAR Productions has selected a Spectra® T-Finity tape library to archive 180,000 hours (8.0PB) of NASCAR Productions’ high-resolution video footage. The enterprise-class T-Finity, utilizing LTO data tape technology, will manage and store NASCAR’s vast historical broadcast data, including NASCAR-related events, TV programs, movies, commercials and other broadcast-related data sets. NASCAR’s video footage was previously archived on a Spectra T950 tape library, enabling a transition to a higher-capacity T-Finity tape library using Spectra’s TranScale feature, which protects prior investments and allows users to seamlessly transform and scale an existing tape library.

“When NASCAR Productions purchased the T950 library in 2008 it was configured to archive 50,000 hours of video footage, and in just five years, its broadcast data bloomed by 260 percent to 180,000 hours,” said Brian Grainger, Spectra Logic’s senior vice president of worldwide sales. “We have served NASCAR’s storage needs for many years, and were pleased to help them meet their growing needs with Spectra’s efficient, timesaving TranScale capabilities. Spectra Logic Installs More Than Half an Exabyte of Tape Storage Capacity in First Half of FY2013

Posts 9% Year-over-Year Growth and Strong Profitability

BOULDER, Colo.—February 26, 2013—Spectra Logic today announced strong revenue and profitability results for the first half of fiscal year 2013, which ended December 31. Following six consecutive years of profitability, Spectra Logic’s momentum continued as high capacity, tape-based archives have become the prevailing standard for media and entertainment, high performance computing (HPC), cloud and general IT organizations challenged with storing, managing and accessing massive amounts of unstructured file data. Company revenue increased nine percent year-over-year during the first half led by strong revenue growth of Spectra’s flagship product, the Enterprise T-Finity tape library. The company installed 550 Petabytes (or .55 Exabytes) of tape library storage capacity during the six-month period ended December 31.

“Our financial strength combined with strong growth in the file archive market is enabling us to invest significantly in R&D, which will be reflected in a strong slate of new products and technologies this coming year. In fact, over the next 12 months we plan to launch a large number of new data storage products – more than were released in the past five years combined,” said Nathan Thompson, Spectra Logic’s chief executive officer. “The value of tape technology and its essential role in today’s modern data centers is indisputable for both traditional backup as well as the tape-based file archive market. This value is recognized and embraced by leading organizations worldwide – and is reflected in Spectra Logic’s consistent growth and momentum.”

Data storage trends bolstered the company’s growth as unstructured data continued to grow unabated, with many of the world’s largest data centers storing Petabyte- and Exabyte-level data volumes on automated tape library platforms. An example of this was the installation of the tape archive system for NCSA’s Blue Waters supercomputing system, which is one of the largest and most powerful supercomputers in the world. Honor Caps Year of Significant Success and Achievement for Spectra

BOULDER, Colo.—December 11, 2012—Spectra Logic today announced that it has earned the top honors in the Storage magazine/SearchStorage.com Quality Awards winning both the enterprise and midrange tape library categories. Sweeping the win for the 2012 Tape Library Quality awards marks the sixth time the company has won first place in a Quality Awards category, and caps a year of significant success and technological achievements, including the availability of 10GbE iSCSI connectivity, the commencement of LTO-6 shipments and the installation of the 380 PBs nearline tape archive for NCSA’s Blue Waters supercomputing system, which is one of the largest and most powerful supercomputers in the world.

With the Quality Awards win, Spectra Logic outpaced competing midrange and enterprise tape library solutions from IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, Quantum and Dell. End-user respondents gave Spectra Logic particularly high marks for initial product quality, product reliability, and its knowledgeable sales force representatives and technical support personnel.

2012 Quality Awards: About the Survey

The Storage magazine / SearchStorage.com Quality Awards are designed to identify and recognize products that have proven their quality and reliability in actual use. Results are derived from a survey of qualified readers who assess products in five main categories: sales-force competence, initial product quality, product features, product reliability and technical support. In the sixth category, respondents are asked if they would repeat their purchase and buy the tape library again. The methodology incorporates statistically valid polling that eliminates market share as a factor. The objective is to identify the most reliable products on the market regardless of vendor name, reputation or size. Products are rated on a scale of 1.00 to 8.00, where 8.00 is the best score. A total of 378 respondents provided 468 midrange and enterprise-class tape library evaluations.

Spectra Logic Granted Motion to Stay Proceedings of Unwarranted Lawsuit by Overland Storage

BOULDER, Colo.—December 11, 2012—Spectra Logic announced today that the San Diego Court has ruled favorably on its Motion to Stay Overland Storage, Inc.'s (NASDAQ: OVRL) lawsuit proceedings regarding alleged patent infringement pending the outcome of similar proceedings currently in process with the International Trade Commission ("ITC").

Overland's asserted patent claims are invalid and not infringed. Spectra Logic's response to the lawsuit includes relatively unique defenses that Overland's request for damages is completely extinguished due to Overland's unusually long delay and misleading conduct in connection with the lawsuit.

Spectra Logic Announces 10GbE Connectivity to Tape Solution

Spectra’s Complete Family of T-Series Libraries Compatible with 10GbE iSCSI Interface

FRANKFURT, Germany (SNW Europe) & BOULDER, Colo. —Oct. 30, 2012—Spectra Logic, today announced the introduction of support for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) iSCSI connectivity as an interface option for the Spectra T-Series tape libraries. The 10GbE iSCSI connectivity solution is offered in partnership with Bridgeworks utilizing its EFC102200 10GbE iSCSI to Fibre Channel (FC) Bridge, and allows modern data centers to achieve total flexibility, performance and simple integration of their tape system into 10GbE SANs.
