BOULDER, Colo.—January 17, 2012—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced the worldwide launch of its Linear Tape Open Generation 6 (LTO-6) tape drive pre-purchase program. With general availability of LTO-6 tape drives and media expected in 2012, customers can now join the LTO-6 pre-purchase program and receive LTO-5 drives today for use until LTO-6 drives become available. Once LTO-6 is released, pre-purchase customers will be at the top of the initial shipment list to receive new LTO-6 drives from Spectra. This unique program from Spectra Logic enables customers to make tape library purchases to meet today's data storage needs while ensuring the investment is future-proofed with an upgrade to the next generation drive and media technology once available.

For Spectra's larger libraries, including the T-Finity, T950, T680, T380 and T200, LTO-6 tape drives will include native 8 gigabit (Gb) fibre channel interfaces that are compatible with existing 2Gb, 4Gb and 8Gb fibre channel switches and host bus adapters. For the Spectra T50e and T120 libraries, LTO-6 tape drives will come in either 8Gb fibre channel or 6Gb SAS interfaces. LTO-6 will offer a storage capacity of up to 8.0 terabytes (compressed, or 3.2 TB native) – more than double the capacity of the previous generation, and expected transfer rates of up to 525 megabytes per second (compressed, or 210 MB/s native).¹

LTO-6 drives are designed with backwards-compatible read-and-write capability with LTO-5 cartridges, and backward read capabilities with LTO-4 and LTO-5 cartridges, to ensure investment protection and to ease deployment. In addition, LTO-6 drives will be fully compatible with Spectra's BlueScale® software and features, including BlueScale Encryption and Key Management, Spectra's Media Lifecycle Management (MLM), Data Integrity Verification, drive-level AES-256 bit encryption key generation and WORM media capabilities.

Availability

Spectra Logic's pre-purchase program is available immediately to customers and channel partners worldwide for Spectra's complete line of T-Series tape libraries. The Spectra T-Finity, T950, T680, T380, T200, T120 and T50e libraries are all LTO-6 ready and eligible for pre-purchase. Participants in Spectra's LTO-6 pre-purchase program will be the first to receive LTO-6 drives when they become available. LTO-6 drives and media are expected to ship in the second half of 2012.

Spectra Logic shipped its first T950 tape library in October, 2004 with LTO-2 tape drives/media, and began shipping LTO-5 tape drives/media in June, 2010. The LTO Ultrium "open format" technology provides a trusted, long-term roadmap that currently extends to the eighth generation of LTO technology, and offers users the flexibility of multiple sources for their drives and media.

Spectra Service PriceLock^TM eliminates future service pricing surprises and allows customers to plan budgets more effectively, as support and service pricing remains predictable for the entire life of the product.

As the computing industry has continually evolved over recent years in moving from petascale to exascale computing, demands on storage platforms have evolved dramatically. Today, Spectra Logic is introducing a suite of advancements that meet the complete feature set, capacity and performance needs of the new market of exascale storage. Spectra Logic is introducing the world’s highest capacity storage system as well as performance, reliability and data integrity advancements across its complete line of T-Series tape libraries. Spectra’s new exascale storage capabilities are designed to help organizations safely store and manage massive amounts of data, and are leading a paradigm shift in expectations and requirements for Big Data and Cloud storage.

According to IDC, in 2011 the amount of information created and replicated will surpass 1,800 exabytes, growing by a factor of 9 in just five years.[1] Data creation in the world today is exponential but disk drive capacity growth is linear. T-Finity ExaScale Storage Powered by BlueScale 12

Spectra Logic is introducing the world’s highest capacity storage system, a high capacity T-Finity enterprise tape library capable of storing more than 3.6 exabytes of data. Powered by Spectra’s BlueScale 12 software management, the Spectra T-Finity provides the highest capacity single library and the highest capacity library complex.  A single T-Finity library will now expand to 40 frames for a capacity of up to 50,000 tape cartridges. In a library complex, up to eight libraries can be clustered using Spectra’s skyway technology for a capacity of up to 400,000 tape cartridges. The Spectra T-Finity with TeraPack media storage is optimally designed for support of Redundant Arrays of Independent Tapes (RAIT) and provides enhanced performance, reliability and data integrity capabilities. With support for LTO and IBM TS1140 technology tape drives, the exascale-capacity T-Finity offers customers the flexibility to choose the right media type and capacity options to best meet their Big Data storage needs.  Tape media options and corresponding native and compressed capacities are shown in the table below.

Spectra Logic’s latest unified management software, BlueScale 12, provides enhanced performance, management, and integration capabilities. With faster barcode scanning and motion code enhancements, BlueScale 12 delivers 35 to 60 percent faster robotic performance across Spectra’s enterprise and mid-range tape libraries, plus 15 to 20 times faster library ‘power on’ times. In addition, BlueScale 12 provides support for CarbideClean^TM media, faster and improved GUI and SSL web certificates and delivers the industry’s first XML-based Open Library API to enable customers’ development groups to directly interface with the system for easy, full integration with their customized software management platforms.

BlueScale 12 is now available on all Spectra T-Series tape libraries providing a common user interface across Spectra’s entire range of tape libraries from the entry-level T50e, distributed level T120, mid- range T200, T380 and T680, and enterprise scale T950 and T-Finity libraries.

Performance, Reliability and Data Integrity Enhancements

In conjunction with its exascale-capacity T-Finity and BlueScale 12 announcements, Spectra Logic also unveiled four significant exascale tape storage and archiving advancements.  The advancements address storage requirements that are critical for exascale data storage – from the smallest, most minute elements to larger-scale capabilities, and include:

• CarbideClean, developed by Spectra Logic as an enhancement to its Certified Media offering. CarbideClean extends the life of tape media and drives by using a precision carbide blade to pre-clean media prior to shipment to customers for initial use. An industry first, Spectra Logic considers CarbideClean a tape media best practice, and is offering it on all Spectra Certified Media as an additional value-add at no additional charge.
• Bulk TeraPack Access Port (TAP) system, which allows customers to import or export tapes 7x faster and more efficiently than before. With Spectra’s Bulk TAP system, users can import or export 500 TBs of data in just minutes. Bulk TAP is an optional feature available on Spectra’s enterprise tape libraries – the T950 and T-Finity.
• Spectra Logic is extending its customer-acclaimed Media Lifecycle Management (MLM) capabilities and reliability advancements to the IBM TS1140 technology tape drives, which are available with Spectra’s enterprise-class T-Finity tape libraries. Spectra’s MLM provides industry-leading tape library reliability and data viability by tracking and proactively alerting customers to replace overused or damaged media. It also performs data integrity verification of the data on tape.
• TeraPack Optimized RAIT. Spectra Logic has teamed with the archive software developers, High Performance Storage System (HPSS), to provide improved management, handling, import, export and storage, as well as up to 2x faster tape mounts of RAIT sets.  RAIT protects users from potential data loss similar to RAID capabilities, historically only offered with disk-based storage systems. TeraPack optimized RAIT from HPSS will begin testing in customer environments this month. The TeraPack is a patented Spectra Logic innovation that maintains a set of tapes with a unified barcode to deliver greater media management efficiencies both within and external to tape libraries.

“HPSS RAIT architecture significantly improves data reliability in high performance, big data environments,” said Jason Alt, senior software engineer, National Center for Supercomputing Applications. “The innovation of RAIT enables customers to recover from a media failure without having to invest in full duplicate copies of all the data tapes.”

BOULDER, Colo.—October 26, 2011—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, announced today that two former StorageTek (STK)/Sun Microsystems executives have joined Spectra Logic in corporate leadership roles. Jon Benson has been appointed vice president and general manager of emerging markets and David Trachy was named senior director of emerging storage system technologies.  

At Spectra Logic, Benson and Trachy will focus on developing a new line of storage systems to complement Spectra’s current product portfolio. During their tenure at STK and Sun, the pair led the product and business development of numerous tape library, drive, software and disk system platforms.

Benson hailed from STK in its glory days of tape market dominance.  He was employed for more than 19 years and was serving as vice president and general manager of its tape business when the company was purchased by Sun in 2005. During his tenure at StorageTek, Benson directed the business initiatives that led to tape market leadership throughout the 1990s and into 2000-2005 with the PowderHorn, SL8500 and 9840/9940/T10000 tape drives.  After the acquisition of STK by SUN, he served as senior vice president of worldwide storage, tape and disk divisions; leading the multibillion dollar storage business.

For the fourth year in a row, Spectra Logic will participate in SuperComputing, taking place Nov. 14-17 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Wash. (booth 2904). Spectra will be conducting social media contests with giveaways and a grand prize drawing at the show. Amsterdam, IBC— September 9, 2011—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced that Deluxe Digital, a leading post-production and distribution provider, has selected the Spectra Logic T950 tape library with LTO-5 drives to archive over 10TB of film footage processed every day.

In an Active Archive configuration, feature film footage can easily be restored into Digital Deluxe’s production environment for foreign versioning and subtitling. Deluxe Digital’s Active Archive environment allows data to be moved between Digital Deluxe’s SGI disk-based arrays and the T950 library using Atempo’s Time Navigator software. Footage is kept in the Active Archive format for 12 months as standard before the tapes are taken out of the archive and moved to secure off-site storage.

BOULDER, Colo.—August 26, 2011—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, has initiated its Storage Crisis Lifeline program, first introduced in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina, in anticipation of increased customer needs along Hurricane Irene’s path. Spectra Logic’s Global Technical Support Center team is available around the clock to assist customers impacted by the hurricane. Support will be provided to customers after business hours and during weekends, regardless of the Service Level Agreement or support contract covering the damaged tape library, to help organizations restore data and restart operations as quickly as possible.

Customers affected by this event should contact Spectra’s technical support department at 1.800.227.4637 or support@spectralogic.com. Support staff will evaluate the situation and activate a plan to help the customer resume operations. As part of the Storage Crisis Lifeline program, Spectra Logic will ship a free loaner library to severely affected customers who are unable to utilize their existing tape library or perform data restores.

Spectra Logic’s Storage Crisis Lifeline benefits are currently available to US-based customers with a documentable “disaster situation” (fire, flood, hurricane, other “act of God”) and have equipment that is damaged beyond the ability to restore. Once operations are restored, loaner tape libraries can be returned or Spectra will bill the customer if they choose to keep the unit permanently.

Company revenue increased 30 percent and Spectra’s enterprise tape libraries posted revenue growth of 49 percent year-over-year for fiscal 2011. Spectra Logic also posted record profitability and revenue for each quarter of fiscal year 2011, and marked its fifth consecutive year of profitable growth. Spectra’s strong momentum reflects growing market demand for tape-based active archive, backup, compliance and disaster recovery solutions.
