Provides Investment Protection and Guaranteed Access to First Available LTO-6 Shipments

BOULDER, Colo.—January 17, 2012—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced the worldwide launch of its Linear Tape Open Generation 6 (LTO-6) tape drive pre-purchase program. With general availability of LTO-6 tape drives and media expected in 2012, customers can now join the LTO-6 pre-purchase program and receive LTO-5 drives today for use until LTO-6 drives become available. Once LTO-6 is released, pre-purchase customers will be at the top of the initial shipment list to receive new LTO-6 drives from Spectra. This unique program from Spectra Logic enables customers to make tape library purchases to meet today's data storage needs while ensuring the investment is future-proofed with an upgrade to the next generation drive and media technology once available.

For Spectra's larger libraries, including the T-Finity, T950, T680, T380 and T200, LTO-6 tape drives will include native 8 gigabit (Gb) fibre channel interfaces that are compatible with existing 2Gb, 4Gb and 8Gb fibre channel switches and host bus adapters. For the Spectra T50e and T120 libraries, LTO-6 tape drives will come in either 8Gb fibre channel or 6Gb SAS interfaces. LTO-6 will offer a storage capacity of up to 8.0 terabytes (compressed, or 3.2 TB native) – more than double the capacity of the previous generation, and expected transfer rates of up to 525 megabytes per second (compressed, or 210 MB/s native).1

LTO-6 drives are designed with backwards-compatible read-and-write capability with LTO-5 cartridges, and backward read capabilities with LTO-4 and LTO-5 cartridges, to ensure investment protection and to ease deployment. In addition, LTO-6 drives will be fully compatible with Spectra's BlueScale® software and features, including BlueScale Encryption and Key Management, Spectra's Media Lifecycle Management (MLM), Data Integrity Verification, drive-level AES-256 bit encryption key generation and WORM media capabilities.

"Spectra Logic's LTO-6 pre-purchase program will allow our customers to seamlessly and economically scale the capacity of their storage backup and archive infrastructures," said Dave Hiechel, president and CEO of EAGLE Software, a U.S.-based Elite SpectraEDGE channel partner. "Many of our customers took advantage of Spectra's industry-first LTO-5 advance purchase program, and we are excited about this similar offering for LTO-6. When LTO-6 becomes available, our customers will have the libraries and infrastructure already in place, and will immediately recognize dramatic capacity and performance increases from this new technology within the same data center footprint they use today."

"Once again Spectra is ahead of the pack with its LTO-6 pre-purchase program, which allows customers to drive forward with new tape library hardware today rather than delaying purchasing decisions until new technology becomes available," said Keith Warburton, director, Global Distribution, a SpectraEDGE value add channel distributor based in the United Kingdom. "With Spectra Logic's exclusive LTO-6 advance purchase program our resellers' customers can future-proof their storage requirements, lower their total cost of data protection, and greatly increase their capacity and performance in the same or smaller foot print."

"Spectra Logic's LTO-6 pre-purchase program offers customers confidence that investments they make today are future proofed. There is no risk in implementing today's LTO-5 technology when a pre-purchase program for LTO-6 guarantees cost, priority shipment and seamless upgrades when available. LTO-6 Pre-purchase customers will be among the first to gain the capacity and performance advantages of LTO-6 drive technology," said Molly Rector, Spectra Logic's Chief Marketing Officer. "LTO's roadmap provides consistent, state-of-the -art technological advancements in tape reliability, capacity and transfer rate capabilities. These advancements leverage the inherent advantages of tape technology, and enable customers to keep pace with their ever-growing data storage requirements – reliably and cost effectively."

	Availability

Spectra Logic's pre-purchase program is available immediately to customers and channel partners worldwide for Spectra's complete line of T-Series tape libraries.

BOULDER, Colo.—November 21, 2011—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, announced today that CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is evaluating Spectra Logic tape library technology. Spectra® T-Series tape libraries were installed in CERN’s laboratory in July to store data copies from its Large Hadron Collider (LHC) multi-national scientific project. CERN will migrate LHC data from a Spectra® T380 tape library to a Spectra T-Finity, using CERN’s Advanced STORage manager (CASTOR) for hierarchical storage management.

“With CERN’s vast volumes of data, we needed a solution that would provide scalability for growth while ensuring the integrity and accessibility of the data. We easily integrated Spectra’s T-Series tape libraries with our CASTOR HSM software, providing high density in a very small data center footprint,” said Vladimír Bahyl, tape service manager at CERN. “The Spectra T-Series tape library platform allows CERN to scale both hardware and software to make capacity upgrades quick, seamless and affordable as our data sets grow.”

The LHC is a gigantic particle accelerator used by physicists worldwide to examine the world’s tiniest atomic particles and the results of their collisions, recreate the Big Bang, and gather information about the Universe. CERN is the center for all LHC-related experiments, and it collects and stores around 25 petabytes of scientific data per year from numerous LHC experiments then redistributes it to multiple sites across several countries around the world.

“CERN’s many experiments produce research data that may be critical years down the line, so they store data indefinitely. The Spectra T-Series tape library platform isbacked by more than a decade of engineering innovation and designed to offer a cost-effective lifetime investment in storage,” said Matt Starr, chief technology officer at Spectra Logic. “The T-Finity is a great choice for CERN’s scientific projects as it provides high density, scalability, capacity and availability as multiple physicists worldwide must access the stored research data today and far into the future.”

	About CERN
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature. The instruments used at CERN are particle accelerators and detectors. Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies before they are made to collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the results of these collisions. Founded in 1954, the CERN Laboratory sits astride the Franco–Swiss border near Geneva. It was one of Europe’s first joint ventures and now has 20 Member States.

BOULDER, Colo.—November 1, 2011—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, announced today its new Spectra Service pricing guarantee, which ensures that list pricing of its T-Series tape library service contract rates will never increase above the rate of inflation. Spectra Service PriceLockTM eliminates future service pricing surprises and allows customers to plan budgets more effectively, as support and service pricing remains predictable for the entire life of the product.

“Customers typically keep tape libraries in production for seven to 15 years; however, many vendors increase support costs substantially after a product has been in use a mere three years,” said Kyle Knack, director, infrastructure systems for National Geographic. “It is unusual to see an archiving provider offer such a commitment to its customers, and further solidifies our decision to choose Spectra Logic as our storage provider more than four years ago.”

All new and currently installed United States based T-Series tape library customers, including the Spectra T50e and T120, the Spectra T-Series Mid-Range T200, T380 and T680, and the enterprise class T950 and T-Finity, are eligible for the new pricing commitment from Spectra Logic starting today. The company is currently developing similar plans for other regions.

“In addition to the long duration of product use, as technologies advance users consistently make technology upgrades to take advantage of faster drives, higher capacity media and new network interface upgrades,” said Molly Rector, Spectra Logic’s chief marketing officer. “Spectra Logic’s new PriceLock support pricing guarantee ensures a customer’s storage investment can be accurately budgeted and safeguarded throughout the life of the tape library.”

Every Spectra Service and Support package is covered under the program, including Next Business Day, Next Business Day Onsite, Same Business Day Onsite and Four-Hour Onsite packages. Spectra Logic is locking the MSRP price today at its current rates, which have been fixed since 2008, as part of the new price protection program.

“Spectra Logic’s new PriceLock guarantee offers a significant advantage to users because it enables long-term budget planning and eliminates future surprises on service pricing, which is typically subject to annual increases in the IT world,” said Jeff Byrne, senior analyst for the Taneja Group. “This level of commitment lets customers trust that their Spectra tape libraries and service pricing will both be reliable for the long haul.”

BOULDER, Colo.—November 1, 2011—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today unveiled five new products and advancements that reset the bar in defining exascale storage. As the computing industry has continually evolved over recent years in moving from petascale to exascale computing, demands on storage platforms have evolved dramatically. Today, Spectra Logic is introducing a suite of advancements that meet the complete feature set, capacity and performance needs of the new market of exascale storage. Spectra Logic is introducing the world’s highest capacity storage system as well as performance, reliability and data integrity advancements across its complete line of T-Series tape libraries. Spectra’s new exascale storage capabilities are designed to help organizations safely store and manage massive amounts of data, and are leading a paradigm shift in expectations and requirements for Big Data and Cloud storage.

"The 'Big Data' trend is driving technology requirements in applications ranging from enterprise data centers to academic supercomputing labs,” said Addison Snell, CEO of Intersect360 Research. “The next generation of exascale data will require capabilities that not only provide sufficient capacity, but also deliver the speed, reliability, and data integrity features to match the needs of these environments."

According to IDC, in 2011 the amount of information created and replicated will surpass 1,800 exabytes, growing by a factor of 9 in just five years.[1] Data creation in the world today is exponential but disk drive capacity growth is linear. Organizations are seeking exascale storage, which is defined as a storage system that is contiguously accessible and scalable to more than an exabyte of capacity. New data storage strategies built on highly scalable tape-based storage systems are necessary to offer the paradigm shift needed to meet these burgeoning data storage needs.

T-Finity ExaScale Storage Powered by BlueScale 12

Performance, Reliability and Data Integrity Enhancements

In conjunction with its exascale-capacity T-Finity and BlueScale 12 announcements, Spectra Logic also unveiled four significant exascale tape storage and archiving advancements. The advancements address storage requirements that are critical for exascale data storage – from the smallest, most minute elements to larger-scale capabilities, and include:

CarbideClean, developed by Spectra Logic as an enhancement to its Certified Media offering. CarbideClean extends the life of tape media and drives by using a precision carbide blade to pre-clean media prior to shipment to customers for initial use. An industry first, Spectra Logic considers CarbideClean a tape media best practice, and is offering it on all Spectra Certified Media as an additional value-add at no additional charge.

Bulk TeraPack Access Port (TAP) system, which allows customers to import or export tapes 7x faster and more efficiently than before. With Spectra’s Bulk TAP system, users can import or export 500 TBs of data in just minutes. Bulk TAP is an optional feature available on Spectra’s enterprise tape libraries – the T950 and T-Finity.

Spectra Logic T950 Provides Highly-Scalable Platform for Retention of High Value Feature-Film Assets

Amsterdam, IBC— September 9, 2011—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced that Deluxe Digital, a leading post-production and distribution provider, has selected the Spectra Logic T950 tape library with LTO-5 drives to archive over 10TB of film footage processed every day.

In an Active Archive configuration, feature film footage can easily be restored into Digital Deluxe’s production environment for foreign versioning and subtitling. Deluxe Digital’s Active Archive environment allows data to be moved between Digital Deluxe’s SGI disk-based arrays and the T950 library using Atempo’s Time Navigator software. Footage is kept in the Active Archive format for 12 months as standard before the tapes are taken out of the archive and moved to secure off-site storage.

“Feature film foreign versioning and subtitling for theatrical distribution are key, specialised services for Deluxe Digital London and have been ever since the two concepts evolved,” said Chris Green, Production Systems Engineer, Deluxe Digital. “As the world leader in both these areas, with clients from major Hollywood studios to territory-based distributors, we rely on best of breed technology to ensure our continued leadership. Spectra Logic gives us the most cost effective, secure and efficient means of safeguarding our clients’ digital assets and ensuring they are readily available for valuable versioning and subtitling projects. Being based in Soho, London, floor space was also a major factor in our decision to select Spectra Logic: the massive density of the T950 and LTO-5 format means we have increased our capacity while making significant space savings compared with our previous Storagetek library, which was so huge we needed to remove windows to allow a crane to winch it into our offices.”

“Spectra Logic’s continued technological innovation, coupled with our strategic partnerships with the likes of other industry leaders such as SGI and Atempo allows us to deliver powerful content Storage Solutions to media and entertainment customers,” said Hossein ZiaShakeri, senior vice president of Business Development & alliances, Spectra Logic. “It’s gratifying to see our technology being used by Deluxe Digital in post-production work on some of the most high profile films in recent years, including the Harry Potter franchise and Avatar.

Come and visit Spectra Logic at IBC on stand 7.K36. Spectra will showcase its archive solutions at both shows and demonstrate the capabilities of its full range of tape libraries, including a 3-frame Spectra® T-Finity, T950, T200, and T50e.

Support will be provided to customers after business hours and during weekends, regardless of the Service Level Agreement or support contract covering the damaged tape library, to help organizations restore data and restart operations as quickly as possible.

Customers affected by this event should contact Spectra’s technical support department at 1.800.227.4637 or support@spectralogic.com. Support staff will evaluate the situation and activate a plan to help the customer resume operations. As part of the Storage Crisis Lifeline program, Spectra Logic will ship a free loaner library to severely affected customers who are unable to utilize their existing tape library or perform data restores.

“While our customers along Hurricane Irene’s path prepare to protect their homes and families, Spectra Logic support is here to assist wherever possible,” said Andrew Philippou, Spectra Logic’s vice president of worldwide support and services. “Spectra Logic is committed to employing all available resources to help customers protect their data. Where customers may have experienced total loss or severe impact to operations, Spectra Logic’s Storage Crisis Lifeline program is able to offer a loaner library to significantly mitigate impact to operations.”

Spectra Logic’s Storage Crisis Lifeline benefits are currently available to US-based customers with a documentable “disaster situation” (fire, flood, hurricane, other “act of God”) and have equipment that is damaged beyond the ability to restore. Once operations are restored, loaner tape libraries can be returned or Spectra will bill the customer if they choose to keep the unit permanently.
