Data Storage Provider Teams with Milestone Systems and SoleraTec to Deliver Optimized Video Lifecycle Management

BOULDER, Colo.—May 10, 2012-- Spectra Logic today announced that it will be showcasing its T-Series digital data tape library at the IFSEC International security show, May 14-17, 2012 in Birmingham, UK. The company will partner with Milestone Systems and SoleraTec to demonstrate an integrated solution for video lifecycle management in the Milestone Systems’ booth located in Hall 4/Stand F90.

The integrated solution on display at IFSEC features Milestone’s XProtect® software, SoleraTec’s Phoenix RSM software and a Spectra® T50e LTO digital data tape library. The solution offers customers a complete end-to-end package that meets both short and long term video data retention requirements.

“Providing a compelling, easy-to-use, affordable, yet professional video surveillance management solution is our top focus. By teaming with Spectra Logic and Milestone, any organization that needs longer-term video retention can now trust a seamlessly integrated long-term video management system," said Mark Armstrong, CEO of SoleraTec.

Milestone XProtect is an open platform that allows best-in-class solutions to video enable business thereby reducing costs, optimizing processes, protecting people and assets and ultimately increasing value in customers’ products and services.
To provide further value to the Milestone recording server, SoleraTec’s Phoenix RSM software extends archive and retention capacity to removable storage media such as LTO digital computer data tape. Phoenix RSM manages online, near-line, and offline storage resources for the Milestone platform and makes all video assets very quickly searchable and viewable.

“The nice thing is that we are seeing these two companies combine their technologies for an exponentially innovative solution that supports the storage from our video management software. This lifts the Milestone open platform concept to another level of cost-saving benefits for customers,” said Martin Friis-Mikkelsen, head of strategic alliances at Milestone Systems.

With Milestone XProtect combined with Phoenix RSM, megapixel and HD cameras can now be used with no distress over storage limitations. The Spectra Logic data tape libraries managed by the Phoenix RSM solution allow high-resolution video feeds to be stored on lower-cost storage devices while Phoenix RSM-generated low-resolution companion files remain on primary storage for ultra-fast search and video playback.

Spectra Logic’s T-Series family of digital data tape storage systems meets long-term retention and accessibility requirements and provides the lowest cost per GB storage for surveillance video. These systems enable ultra-fast search and playback, the ability to store at maximum frame rates and resolution, near-line and offline video storage capabilities, and cost effective scaling to meet future capacity needs.

“A number of factors are driving the use of video surveillance including the threat of terrorism, overall crime and theft, and the convergence from analog to digital. These trends create a huge opportunity for the storage industry, which is tasked with properly storing and retaining the data contained within the video,” said Brian Grainger, vice president of worldwide sales, Spectra Logic. “Spectra Logic’s libraries allow companies to preserve surveillance video while meeting long-term retention and accessibility requirements.”

Annual Guide and 5-Star Designation Identifies the IT Channel’s Most Exceptional Vendor Partner Programs

Boulder, Colo. -- March 26, 2012 – Spectra Logic today announced that its channel partner program, SpectraEDGE, has been named to CRN’s 2012 Partner Programs Guide. SpectraEDGE was also awarded a 5-Star Partner rating reflecting its standing as one of the top channel partner programs among information technology (IT) vendors, and its strong commitment to the channel.

Spectra Logic’s data storage solutions offer a major revenue opportunity for the channel. Spectra’s SpectraEDGE Partner Program is designed to make it easy for partners to profit from the growing data storage market opportunity by ensuring they have the tools and training needed to succeed and grow their businesses. CRN’s 5-Star rating reflects the strength of the SpectraEDGE program, which has been consistently recognized as a premier reseller program, offering differentiated, easy-to-sell products, strong margins, account registration protection, field support and 24x7 online educational training through Spectra University.

“We are very committed to providing our channel partners with the products, tools and resources they need to succeed,” said Betsy Doughty, director of partner and channel development at Spectra Logic. “Spectra Logic’s data storage solutions combined with our robust and flexible SpectraEDGE channel program enable our partners to provide their customers with smart, efficient storage solutions to manage, retain and protect their data, while at the same time profitably grow their businesses.”

The 2012 CRN Partner Program Guide and CRN 5-Star Partner Rating serve as the definitive list of vendors who have robust partner programs and products that service solution providers offer directly to the IT Channel. In building the list, UBM Channel Research developed a methodology in which vendors are assessed on information provided in their completed applications. The objective criteria takes into account each vendor’s investments in program offerings, partner profitability, partner training, education and support, marketing programs and resources, sales support and communication.

“The companies listed in CRN’s 2012 Partner Programs Guide represent the best channel programs in the market today,” said Kelley Damore, VP and Editorial Director, for UBM Channel’s CRN. “The 5-star award is reserved for vendors that understand that a successful partnership does not rely solely on the technology. By offering their partners tools, education and regular updates, vendors on this list go above and beyond traditional support to ensure a mutually beneficial partnership.”

Launched in 2008, SpectraEDGE has grown to over 500 channel partners worldwide and continues to expand its offering and its reach, with notable growth this past year in the United States, Canada, Europe, India, the Middle East, Australia and Latin America.
Growing Demand for ‘Big Data’ Storage and Active Archive Spurs Increased Investment in Region

SYDNEY, AU and BOULDER, Colo.—March 6, 2012—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced its expansion and increased resource investment in Australia and New Zealand. The company’s decision to further increase its global presence is the direct result of escalating data growth and the need to manage it.

As part of its expansion, Spectra Logic has increased its presence in Sydney and is investing in sales support and technical staff, including the addition of Michael Cocks as Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand. Spectra Logic is also investing in a strong channel recruitment program and has signed numerous reseller partners as part of its award-winning SpectraEDGE reseller program, including SGI, Storm FX, UXC Connect, Techtel, Data Engines, Intraware and Magna Systems.

“Having a local presence in the ANZ region will enable us to offer enhanced, efficient local support and expertise, thus enriching the overall experience of our customers,” said Brian Grainger, vice president of worldwide sales, Spectra Logic. “Organizations need intelligent, integrated, and easy-to-use archive, active archive and backup solutions to manage, protect and preserve their growing data volumes. Throughout our 30+ year history, Spectra Logic has delivered high-density, feature rich storage with unmatched service and support.”

The Australian National University (ANU) located in Canberra, and ranked as one of the top universities in Australia, recently deployed two Spectra Logic T950 enterprise tape libraries at the heart of its tape-based active archive to support ANU’s high performance private data cloud storage solution. In addition, ANU hosts the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) – Australia’s national high-end research computing service. The enterprise requirements of ANU, together with the research needs served by NCI, have led to a massive and rapidly increasing requirement for data storage and management.

ANU and NCI evaluated the best solution for its needs and, after careful evaluation, chose Spectra Logic’s archive solution within a SGI storage cloud because of its high data reliability, scalability, and extreme cost efficiencies in terms of space, energy usage and total cost per terabyte.

“With more than 7 Petabytes of initial critical research data that streams in and out of high performance instruments, computational and data-intensive processes, as well as an increasing need to share data for international data-centric collaborations, the Spectra Logic system forms a central component of our storage cloud,” said Dr. Ben Evans, associate director of NCI.

“The incorporation of the Spectra Logic’s active archive solution provides a platform for storage growth,” said Allan Williams, director of information technology services at the ANU. “It allows us to keep our primary data online and accessible to users, while also increasing the reliability of our stored data across physical sites.”

“We are delighted that Spectra Logic has increased its presence in the region and look forward to continuing to work with them as our data needs inevitably evolve,” added Dr. Evans.

In the ANZ region Spectra Logic will offer its complete line of automated tape library solutions from its entry-level T50e, mid-range T120, T200, T380 and T680, and enterprise scale T950 and T-Finity libraries. Powered by Spectra Logic’s unified management software, BlueScale 12, these storage solutions provide industry-leading performance, lifecycle management, and integration capabilities. Escalating data growth continues to make tape the optimal storage solution: cost effective, efficient long term retention, highest data integrity, environmentally sound, highly secure and easily portable.

In addition to its Australia/New Zealand presence, Spectra Logic has offices in Europe, the United States, Canada, and India, and has customers in more than 40 countries.

The cloud-based storage installation with Spectra’s tape-based active archive allows ANU to efficiently support its exponential data growth, accelerate access to its research data, and improve overall data reliability.

ANU also hosts the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) – Australia’s national high-end research computing service, funded by the Australian Government through its NCRIS and Super Science research infrastructure initiatives, and by a number of national research organizations including ANU, CSIRO, Bureau of Meteorology and Geoscience Australia. With the University’s data doubling every 14-18 months, the enterprise requirements of ANU, together with the research needs served by NCI, have led to a massive and rapidly increasing requirement for data storage and management.

“The Spectra Logic system forms a central component of our storage cloud. The ANU cloud uses the SGI Data Migration Facility (DMF) tiered storage along with the Spectra Logic tape libraries to scale NCI data archive volumes.

“The incorporation of the Spectra Logic active archive solution provides a platform for storage growth,” said Allan Williams, director of information technology services at the ANU. “It allows us to keep our primary data online and accessible to users, while also increasing the reliability of our stored data across physical sites.”

Active archive solutions turn offline archives into visible, accessible extensions of online storage systems – enabling fast, easy access to archived data. Today’s innovative active archive applications provide the ability to see and access data on tape through a file system interface, making it easy and affordable to view and search archived data files in large heterogeneous online active tape and disk storage pools.

ANU’s active archive provides a dense, high capacity storage solution for its cloud installation with significant economies of scale and data integrity safeguards. In addition, Spectra Logic’s Media Lifecycle Management (MLM) feature helps to ensure the University’s data is accessible when needed by providing complete media health reporting.

Integrator SGI, a member of Spectra Logic’s SpectraEDGE partner program, architected, recommended and implemented the data cloud storage solutions, including the new active archive solution with the Spectra Logic enterprise tape libraries.

“Spectra Logic’s archive and backup solutions provide our customers with the latest innovations and storage technologies to handle cloud, big data, back up and protection, data preservation, compliance, and general data center storage needs,” said Nick Gorga, SGI general manager, Australia and New Zealand.

Spectra Logic’s storage solutions are ideal for data intensive IT environments including data cloud deployments, high performance computing (HPC), media and entertainment, large governmental and general IT organizations.

Spurred by its growing number of customers and partners throughout Australia and New Zealand, Spectra Logic recently announced its expanded investment in the region. This investment includes increased sales, support and technical staff, an expanded presence in Sydney and a strong channel recruitment program.

Spectra Logic offers a complete line of automated tape library solutions from its entry-level T50e, mid-range T120, T200, T380 and T680, and enterprise scale T950 and T-Finity libraries. Data Mobility Group Report Highlights Quality and Innovation Benefits of Spectra’s Stateside Tape Library Manufacturing

BOULDER, Colo.—March 6, 2012—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced that it has been named a Top Information Management and Storage Vendor by Data Mobility Group, for its use of US-based manufacturing to deliver its competitive, innovative and high quality tape-based robotic data storage libraries.

“We selected Spectra Logic as a Top Information Management and Storage Vendor of 2012 not because of its top notch management team or history of industry-first innovations in storage but because the company has strategically chosen to keep the bulk of its design, sourcing, manufacturing and testing right here in the United States,” said Joseph Martins, managing director and lead analyst, Data Mobility Group. “Only companies with savvy leadership, high-value products, lean processes and a strong sense of national identity seem willing and able to run their operations here at home.”

Spectra Logic designs and builds almost all of its tape-based data backup and archive storage libraries —including the T120, T200, T380, T680, T950 and its massively scalable T-Finity—in Boulder, Colorado, and excluding the tape media and tape drive added components, an estimated 90 percent of its robotic storage libraries are produced in the U.S. For example, Spectra’s steel and aluminum parts are made in Denver, Colorado and at other area shops, and the plastics and composites used in its industry-leading products are molded by companies in Longmont, Colorado and Texas.

“We admire and respect Spectra Logic’s manufacturing strategy. ‘Owned and Operated in America’ sends a powerful message to a great many consumers who care about how and where the products they purchase are made – and can be a worthy consideration in purchasing decisions,” added Martins.

Tape libraries are some of the most advanced and finely tuned hardware assemblies in a modern data center and are typically installed and used for five to ten years or longer. Maintaining a very high level of quality control for each individual part, sub-assembly and final product is key to ensuring reliable operations in 24/7 long-life, high-performance environments.

“Spectra Logic is able to reap tremendous advantages for our customers and community by manufacturing locally,” said Matt Starr, chief technology officer at Spectra Logic. “We are able to meet the needs of our customers by ensuring the highest quality design, assembly and quality control testing. Plus, we are able to reduce lead times so that our highly configurable storage solutions are delivered to customers in a timely manner and with the exact interfaces, throughput, capacity and software options they need. And importantly, our local manufacturing creates significant skilled job opportunities in Colorado and throughout the United States.”

Spectra Logic offers a complete line of tape-based storage solutions from its entry-level T50e, mid-range T120, T200, T380 and T680, and enterprise scale T950 and T-Finity tape libraries. Powered by Spectra Logic’s unified management software, BlueScale 12, these storage solutions provide industry-leading performance, lifecycle management, and integration capabilities.
Spectra Logic T950 to Provide Foundation for Comprehensive Digitalisation and Cataloguing Project

BOULDER, Colo.—February 14, 2012 —Spectra Logic, celebrating 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced that its technology has been deployed by IWM (Imperial War Museums) to provide archiving and disaster recovery for its vast collection of digital assets. The installation is part of a £3million project that includes the deployment of high-end digital scanning equipment, a Collection Management System (CMS), bespoke Digital Asset Management (DAM) software and a mass storage system to handle the significant amounts of digital data generated by the initiative.

In addition to its conventional museum role IWM is also a major national art gallery, records archive and research centre. Its trustees’ endeavours to collect every type of historical evidence pertaining to conflicts across the world has seen it build an impressive archive, which includes more than 15,000 paintings, drawings and sculptures and 30,000 posters; objects ranging from aircraft, armoured fighting vehicles and naval vessels to uniforms, badges, personal equipment, and medals and decorations; documents, both British and foreign; a library of more than 155,000 books; 120 million feet of cine film and more than 6,500 hours of video tape; more than six million photographs, and some 32,000 hours of historical sound recordings. In particular, the project will be used to preserve precious audio and video footage of Winston Churchill and the Battle of Britain.

Spectra Logic’s T950 tape library has been deployed at IWM Duxford in the UK, one of the museum’s five sites and Europe’s premier aviation museum. From this location, the Spectra® T950 will be used to archive material as the museum’s cataloguing and digitalisation efforts gather pace. IWM also creates around 5TB of new data every year, including information on current operations received from the Ministry of Defence which will also be housed on the Spectra T950. The T950 provides 1PB of storage today and can expand to deliver more capacity as needed in the future. It is connected to IWM’s London data centre sites via Gigabit Ethernet. IWM has set up a mirrored system between the two sites so data is first written to primary storage in IWM London and then replicated to IWM Duxford.

“When IWM embarked on this ambitious project we were aware that our storage requirements would potentially be huge, making capacity, scalability and cost-effectiveness major factors in how we architected our mass storage platform,” said Ian Crawford, Head of ICT at the IWM. “We selected the Spectra Logic T950 as it offers significant capacity up-front, with an architecture that will allow us to add further silos, drives and tapes to satisfy our future storage demands. This, allied with the long-term LTO roadmap, ensures that our investment is future-proofed and our requirements met at the lowest possible price per GB.”

“The shift to digital content and the need for organisations to protect their archives is one of the great challenges in the storage industry today,” said Molly Rector, executive vice president of product management and worldwide marketing, Spectra Logic. “By creating an active archive system across tape and disk, IWM has not only addressed its needs from a capacity perspective, but is also able to make its archived assets readily available, supporting the business’ drive to increase revenue streams through licensing and reprints.”

About IWM
IWM (Imperial War Museums) tells the story of people who have lived, fought and died in conflicts involving Britain and the Commonwealth since the First World War.

Our unique Collections, made up of the everyday and the exceptional, reveal stories of people, places, ideas and events. Using these, we tell vivid personal stories and create powerful physical experiences across our five museums that reflect the realities of war as both a destructive and creative force. We challenge people to look at conflict from different perspectives, enriching their understanding of the causes, course and consequences of war and its impact on people’s lives.

IWM’s five branches are IWM London, IWM’s flagship branch with six floors of exhibitions and displays; IWM North, housed in an iconic award-winning building designed by Daniel Libeskind; IWM Duxford, a world renowned aviation museum and Britain's best preserved wartime airfield; Churchill War Rooms, housed in Churchill’s secret headquarters below Whitehall; and the Second World War cruiser HMS Belfast.
Provides Investment Protection and Guaranteed Access to First Available LTO-6 Shipments

BOULDER, Colo.—January 17, 2012—Spectra Logic, celebrating more than 30 years of data storage innovation, today announced the worldwide launch of its Linear Tape Open Generation 6 (LTO-6) tape drive pre-purchase program. With general availability of LTO-6 tape drives and media expected in 2012, customers can now join the LTO-6 pre-purchase program and receive LTO-5 drives today for use until LTO-6 drives become available.
