OEM Agreement Offers Single Point of Purchasing and Support to Minimize Complexity

BOULDER, Colo.—June 9, 2009 – Spectra Logic has entered into an OEM agreement with Symantec Corp. Spectra Logic now offers Symantec’s award-winning suite of data protection software as an option to its line of innovative tape and disk-based backup and archive solutions. Spectra Logic can now provide customers a single point of contact for architecting, purchasing, installing and supporting a complete data protection solution that includes both disk and tape.

NASA Ames Selects Spectra Logic Federal for Data Archive after Nine-Month Competitive Evaluation

NASA Ames Replaces Ten Silos with Two T950s, Reclaims 1400 Square Feet of Data Center Floor Space

BOULDER, Colo.—April 20, 2009 – NASA Ames, a Silicon Valley-based research center of NASA, recently installed two Spectra® T950 tape libraries with LTO-4 drives and media, which together offer approximately 20,000 data storage slots and up to 32 petabytes of storage capacity, with data compression. By replacing multiple, outdated Sun/STK 9310 silos with Spectra Logic technology, NASA Ames has freed more than 1400 square feet of valuable data center floor space.

After an extensive nine-month evaluation period, NASA selected Spectra Logic Federal to address its high performance computing (HPC) enterprise archive needs. Ten Sun/STK silos were replaced by two T950 units which include new library management features and functionality for NASA.

National Geographic Global Media Selects Spectra T950 for Digital Archival

National Geographic Improves Uptime, Increases Performance, Reclaims Floor Space with new Archive

LAS VEGAS—NAB—April 20, 2009– National Geographic Global Media has selected a five-frame Spectra® T950 with LTO-4 drives and more than 6,000 tape slots to store all of National Geographic’s high-resolution digital content as it is migrated from primary disk using SGI’s DMF software. The T950 archive will also store a backup copy of the low-resolution proxy data on tape for long-term access.

Since the implementation of the T950 digital tape archive, the broadcast division of the National Geographic Society has:
• Improved uptime with proactive monitoring to allow scheduled maintenance
• Tripled performance speeds with LTO-4
• Dramatically reduced data center floor space requirements

“High density was our biggest requirement for the new digital archive solution, as National Geographic was under pressure to maximize the limited square footage in our data center,” said Stavros Hilaris, VP and CTO for National Geographic Global Media, about the company’s switch to Spectra Logic technology. “The T950 lets us store large amounts of content –up to 350,000 hours of HD video—or more than eight petabytes of data—to substantially grow our digital video archive in the industry’s smallest footprint.”

WASHINGTON D.C.—FOSE2009—March 10, 2009 –Storage administrators face multiple dilemmas today as many tape hardware vendors regularly announce budget cuts and reduced investment in research and development. The GSA IT Catalog research rankings are based on combined products and services revenue generated by Federal agencies purchasing products through GSA in calendar year 2008.

BOULDER, Colo.—February 3, 2009 – Spectra Logic has extended its Media Lifecycle Management (MLM) technology outside the library with a new MLM Reader, which is now shipping. The MLM Reader is a portable device that allows customers to check tape health on any computer through USB, without loading the tape into a library, and is designed to proactively identify faulty tape media before it is required for a data restore. Spectra’s MLM Reader gives users fast access to tape media health scores as well as specific information on individual cartridges to facilitate proactive identification of media that pose a threat.

Because a cartridge’s media quality can’t be determined visually, MLM accesses the media’s health statistics which are stored in each individual tape cartridge. MLM comprehensively analyzes each tape’s health, and indicates when to proactively migrate data from an at-risk cartridge onto new media and avoid data loss.
