What is the difference between “data resiliency” and “data protection?” Both terms relate to digitally preserving organizational assets in the event of a natural disaster or data center corruption, however their means of doing so vary. The main discrepancy between the two really relates back to the cloud.
The term “data resiliency” refers to data’s ability to “spring back” in situations where it is compromised. In the cloud, data is resilient because it can be stored in a number of different locations. No one location is better than the other, availability is just improved by the more places data is stored, specifically in the event a location goes down or the data becomes corrupted. Users have access to data so long as the location they are storing their data at is accessible and the data isn’t compromised. If the one location goes down, users are directed to the second location. If all locations go down, then the organization no longer has access to its data.
Comparable to having keys to one’s house… The more keys you have, the less likely you are to get locked out. Hiding a key outside and keeping one hooked on your key chain assure higher resiliency. If you lose your keys or a key breaks, you can go use your hidden key outside. If you lose all the keys to your house, then you aren’t able to get in.
“Data protection” is the act of taking larger steps to assure one’s data is protected, rather than just saving it to multiple locations. It implies that you have ensured your data is readily available, NOT CORRUPTED, and is in compliance with all required applications. Key methods for achieving data protection include backup, restoration, and replication. It is important to always have access to one’s data, within a given time. This often times requires a restoration when an event occurs. Resilient data can be permanently lost if all locations its being stored at are compromised. Protected data on the other hand can be restored and/or rebuilt, even if the original copy is no longer available.
Back to the house key example… You could provide a locksmith with a guide to your house key. If at some point you didn’t have access to your keys, the locksmith would be able to build you a new key, so you could enter your house.
